Micromax Canvas L A108 Unboxing

We all seem to love large phones and Samsung has capitalized on it big-time. Micromax too has joined the fray with its Canvas L A108 which comes with a 5.5-inch display, quad-core processor with 1 GB RAM running Android 4.4 KitKat. The Canvas L has been priced perfectly, just hitting the sweet spot of the sub Rs. 10,000 segment. Considering the specs and price the Canvas L can be an excellent smartphone for people already used to a 5-inch device.

Build Quality

Micromax has finally started to give a little though to design and its clear with its recent launches be it the Canvas 2 Colours A120 and Canvas Elanza 2. The Canvas L continues that trend with an ergonomic design with thin bezels but a curious lip at the bottom which just seem to be there for design’s sake and doesn't offer any usability. Just above the bottom lip which runs around the phone is a metallic trim which juts out a little bit and it can clip your clothes. The bottom lip also houses the microphone.

At the left of the phone you have the volume rocker while on the right you have the power button. Both are sturdy and feature similar metallic design as the Asus Zenfones. The bottom lip is white in color just like the back-cover breaking the monotonicity of the front panel.

In the front you will see the massive 5.5-inch display and just above it the 2 MP front-facing camera, proximity and light sensors alongwith the main earpiece. Below the display you have three capacitive buttons which do light up but with a rather weak backlight. The display has wide viewing angles and natural color reproduction.

On the back you have the 8 MP primary camera with LED flash with the lens a bit flush with the surface making it an instant scratch magnet. The speakerphone can be found at the bottom but due to the camera hump sound possibly won’t get muffled that much. The back of the device is white matte plastic which feels good to hold and makes the device non-slippery. Always a bonus when handling a large device. The sides too are flat making the Canvas L easier to grip. On the inside you have two full size SIM Card slots, a microSD Card slot and the battery compartment.

At the top you have the audio jack and the microUSB port together while the bottom just houses the primary microphone used for calls. The overall build of Canvas L A108 is quite solid. There is no creaking or flex anywhere. 

First Impressions

The Canvas L A108 is an excellent proposition given Rs. 10,000 price-point. You get a bright 5.5-inch display, quad-core internals running Android 4.4 KitKat. Yes, the device is definitely not meant for single handed use but its still pleasant to use.

The display has wide viewing angles, the touch response is smooth as well and an almost vanilla take on Android KitKat is always welcome. The build quality is also good but the white color might get stained very easily. Using a screenguard is strictly recommended since there is no form of protection on the display.

Moreover, the Canvas L looks good and performs well. If you are looking for a large smartphone and don’t mind its non pocket-ability then the Canvas L A108 should definitely be under consideration. We will be back with its benchmarks, gaming and full-review soon.
